HyperX Cloud Alpha are a pair of gaming headphones that offer one thing above all: a fantastic battery life. HyperX claims that these headphones offer 300 hours of battery life. That means you can use these headphones for just over 12 days straight without a charge, although we would really recommend a break in there somewhere!

Other than how long they’ll last, these headphones also feature a powerful crisp sound and a truly excellent microphone quality.

Is HyperX Cloud Alpha made for Gamers?

Yes, The HyperX Cloud Alpha was designed with gamers in mind. It has a detachable microphone and a comfortable over-the-ear design that is perfect for long gaming sessions. It’s also one of the few gaming headsets that comes with a detachable microphone, which is a nice touch.

The Cloud Alpha uses 50mm neodymium drivers, which is the sweet spot for most gaming headsets. The result is rich, detailed sound with good bass response. You can hear the subtle environmental details in games, and the headset does a good job of conveying the directionality of sounds. The Cloud Alpha is also one of the most comfortable gaming headsets you can buy. The ear cups are spacious and well-padded, and the headband has just the right amount of tension.

The result is a headset that you can wear for hours on end without your ears getting sore. The only downside to the Cloud Alpha is that it doesn’t have any built-in buttons or controls. That means you’ll need to use the included audio control box if you want to adjust the volume or mute the microphone. But that’s a small price to pay for such a great-sounding and comfortable gaming headset.

HyperX Cloud Alpha Battery 300 hours?

HyperX released the Cloud Alpha Wireless gaming headphones in April of 2022 and our friends over at Wired presented us with a puzzle: “How did HyperX’s engineers squeeze 300+ hours of battery life into this thing?” By comparison, most over ear headphones land somewhere in the 30-50 hour region meaning these headphones are up to 10x more efficient.

We tested these, we ran them for about 65 hours—almost three days straight!— and they still had some 260+ hours of life left. At that rate you could listen for almost two weeks before needing to recharge. To say it another way, it’s the equivalent of listening to “Call me maybe” exactly 62,790 times on one charge!

How is this possible?

Well the exterior holds some clues; no lights, no gimmicks – not even Active Noise Cancellation. There’s a detachable external microphone but that’s it. Maybe minimalism in function can explain the spectacular run time. Let’s see what’s inside this thing. The ear cushions come off easily enough. There’s a thin mesh layer secured by double sided tape to protect the drivers. It’s easily removed by carefully peeling it back. Next we undo the four Phillips screws. The cups aren’t even glued down – just apply a little force to separate it from the body.

So far so good. Here’s the first piece of the long life puzzle, the battery is on the larger side. At 5.5 Wh, this battery is larger than average, but there’s no sign of battery innovation here. As a comparison, the HyperX Cloud Flight can be fitted with a 5.5 Wh battery and gets about 30 hours of playtime while on the other end of the spectrum the Audio Technica ATH-S700BT uses a 0.9 Wh battery and gets about 6 hours of playtime. The large battery certainly helps but it’s not the answer to this puzzle so we’ll have to look elsewhere.

We wanted to know if any of the IC chips were responsible for the power savings. We sent pictures of the circuit board to one of our friends for chip ID and this is what we received. Sure enough, newer chips are being used, all of which are optimized for ultra low power applications. The DA7212 dialog semiconductor in particular uses newer generation amplifiers that are up to 70% more efficient. HyperX are by no means the first to use these chips, it’s just one more power saving strategy that eventually adds up to that 300+ number. Here’s a theory: A larger than average battery – A super lean design – combined with the latest power efficient chips. This is probably why this thing can run for 300 hours on a charge.
